How to Prepare Items for Storage: Short & Long-Term Tips

Whether you're storing for a few weeks between move dates or for several months, how items go into storage determines the condition they come out in. A little preparation prevents mould, damp, pest damage and the kind of scuffs and scratches that happen when items aren't properly protected.

Clean everything before it goes into storage

Dirt, food residue and moisture are what attract pests and cause mould in storage. Clean furniture, appliances and boxes thoroughly and make sure everything is completely dry before it's sealed or stacked — packing anything even slightly damp is one of the most common causes of damage in storage.

Prepare appliances properly

Fridges and freezers need to be fully defrosted, cleaned and left open for 24–48 hours to dry out completely before storage — otherwise you risk mould and odour that's very hard to remove later. Washing machines should be drained of all water. Leave appliance doors slightly ajar in storage to prevent trapped moisture.

Protect furniture

• Disassemble beds, large wardrobes and flat-pack furniture — it takes up less space and is less likely to be damaged than a fully built item
• Use furniture covers or blankets, not plastic sheeting directly on wood — plastic traps moisture against the surface
• Store sofas and mattresses upright where possible, on a pallet or boarding, never directly on a concrete floor
• Keep a small gap between items and the storage unit wall to allow airflow

What not to put in storage

• Anything perishable or food-based, even sealed
• Flammable liquids, gas canisters or aerosols
• Damp or wet items of any kind
• Anything irreplaceable and highly sentimental where possible — keep genuinely precious items with you if you can
